This winter, food banks in the Trussell Trust network are expecting to give out an emergency parcel every 9 seconds.

We don’t have to live with this.

This year we’ve already made incredible changes to the way we live, work and look after each other.

And in the last few weeks we’ve seen incredible compassion and concern for families and children facing hunger following Marcus Rashford’s campaigning.

With this winter set to be so busy at food banks, we now need to go one step further. That’s why today we’re joining the movement to begin building a Hunger Free Future. And we invite you to join too.

We know that with your support, we have a real opportunity to build a future where everyone has enough money for the essentials.

Poppy Appeal officially launched in Bridlington at The Promenades

The Poppy Appeal has officially been launched in Bridlington this weekend.

A service was conducted by Reverend Matthew Pollard, Rector of Bridlington Priory and Padre of the Royal British Legion Bridlington Brach, at the war memorial on Saturday morning. The rededication of garden of remembrance took place at 11am.

Poppy crosses, which were laid at the service, are available in the Bridlington Town Council Office and can be laid until Saturday November 9. Members of the public can purchase a poppy cross for a suggested donation of £1.

Afterwards, representatives from the Royal British Legion, Mayor Liam Dealtry and various local groups gathered in the Promenades Shopping Centre for the launch of this year’s appeal.

The Royal British Legion’s largest fundraiser, aims to raise over £50 million to help support serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces community and their families.

Wearing a poppy represents all those who lost their lives on active service in all conflicts; from the beginning of the First World War right up to the present day.

Charity of the Year 2019

Promenades tie up partnership with their Charity of the Year 2019

The Promenades Shopping Centre has named the 6th Bridlington Scouts as their Charity of the Year 2019.

The announcement follows an invitation to the people of the town to nominate the charity they want the Promenades to work with over the next 12 months. A wide range of nominations were received from a variety of charities, community groups and sports teams.

The 6th Bridlington scouts were chosen after an extensive process which saw the management team meet with several of the nominated charities to further discuss the plans for the year ahead.

The charity of the year will host a wide range of events and fundraising efforts throughout the year to help promote the fantastic service they offer to local children.

As well as being Charity of the Year 2019, the 6th Bridlington scouts will also partner the Promenades on the Promenades Extraordinary People Awards 2019, an annual awards ceremony that has become a highlight of the town’s social events calendar.

Carl Brown, centre manager for The Promenades, said: “We are absolutely delighted to name the 6th Bridlington scouts as our Charity of the Year. The nominations allowed the people of Bridlington to decide who should benefit from our fundraising support over the next year, so this is very much the people’s choice.

“It was extremely difficult to choose who our charity of the year would be from those nominated, all those who came forward were excellent and each would have been fantastic to work with in 2019.

We’re looking forward to working with the scouts and are sure they will put on some terrific events and raise some awareness and funds which will help them greatly during this coming year.”

Sharon Taylor, Scout Leader in the 6th Bridlington scouts, said: “It’s a great opportunity for local children to show off their skills and community spirit in a fun way and to show other children and parents that scouting can be very rewarding and great skills can be achieved. The Promenades will provide us with valuable space and resources which will allow us to do some vital fundraising so we can keep going on more adventures with our group, so thank you to the Promenades for allowing our group this great opportunity.

“We are looking forward to contributing towards The Promenades Extraordinary People Awards, which celebrates the hard work of individuals and unsung heroes in Bridlington.”

Promenades announce winner of School Arts Competition

Community get behind Bridlington’s budding young artists as more than 2000 people vote for shopping centre’s annual school art competition

An annual arts campaign launched by Bridlington’s busiest retail destination has been hailed another success as the calibre of entries continues to strengthen.

Nine schools entered the Promenades Shopping Centre’s School Arts Campaign, which sees pupils working together to create huge murals that are displayed in the centre throughout the year. The theme this year, Bridlington Pleasure Boats, the schools were asked to create an inspirational mural based on the theme of the famous pleasure boats that used to sail in and out of Bridlington harbour after the war.

Over 2000 people visited the shopping centre’s website to vote for their favourite masterpiece. Quay Academy came out on top in this year’s competition, with an impressive 1101 votes, second place was awarded to Bay Primary School with 273 votes and Flamborough Primary School came in third place with 175 votes.

Carl Brown, centre manager at Promenades Shopping Centre, said: “This is my second year being involved with the School’s Art Campaign and yet again I was amazed by the quality of the artwork produced by the schools.

“It’s great to see so many engage with the competition and vote for their favourite pieces and have a little bit of friendly rivalry between the schools.

“Here at the Promenades, we actively try and engage with the local community in as many initiatives as possible throughout the year, such as our Charity of the Year, The Extraordinary People Awards and the School Art Campaign.

“The pieces of artwork will be on display throughout the Promenades if people wish to come down and enjoy them.”

The coveted trophy will be presented to the Quay Academy by Carl.

As part of the schools arts project, the Promenades Charity of the Year, the Bridlington Sea Cadets also choose their winner, and this year, they chose the artwork produced by Flamborough Primary School.

Bob Taylor, of Bridlington Sea Cadets said: “The artwork produced this year was fantastic and as with last year, it was a very tough decision to make. The hard work  from the schools that goes into creating these pieces of artwork is amazing and we were blown away with the quality of each piece.

    Autism Hour at the Promenades

The Promenades to hold Autism Hour to help make shopping more autism friendly

    • The Promenades shopping centre will be holding the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour on Monday 8th October at 10am
    • Currently, 64% of autistic people avoid going to the shops because of their autism
    • The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour campaign is asking shops and businesses to take simple steps that will lead to a more autism friendly world

The Promenades, the local community shopping centre has teamed up with leading autism charity, the National Autistic Society, to hold an Autism Hour on the 8th October 2018.
Autism Hour was launched last year as the first mass-participation event to encourage shops to be more autism friendly and more than 5,000 shops and businesses took part. This year the National Autistic Society are thrilled that we have over 7,000 shops already signed up. Many celebrities are backing the campaign including Chris Packham, Anne Hegerty and Christine McGuinness.
There are around 700,000 autistic people in the UK, as well as three million family members and carers. Being autistic means seeing, hearing and feeling the world in a different, often more intense way to other people. Autistic people often find social situations difficult and can struggle to filter out the sounds, smells, sights and information they experience, which can make busy public places, like shops, overwhelming.
Carl Brown, Centre Manager at the Promenades, said: “The Autism Hour is a fantastic initiative and we’re delighted to help support this in our local community.
“We want to make everyone aware of this initiative and give autistic people the opportunity to visit the centre at a time which will make them feel comfortable when shopping at the Promenades and show the rest of the community how, what we may perceive as minor things can impact someone’s shopping experience in a huge way.”
Mark Lever, Chief Executive at the National Autistic Society, said: “It’s wonderful to see so many well-known high street retailers have already signed up – and ready to make the world a more autism friendly place.
“Autistic people represent a huge part of our society and it is a disgrace that 64% of autistic people avoid the shops. And, shockingly, 28% of autistic people have been asked to leave a public place for reasons associated for their autism. They and their families want and deserve to have the opportunity to go to the shops, just like anyone else.
“The National Autistic Society want a world which works for autistic people. With Autism Hour, we want to show retailers the small things they can do to help open up the high street for autistic people. Things like staff finding out a bit more about autism and making simple adjustments such as turning down music or dimming the lights. It’s often the smallest change that makes the biggest difference.
“Over 5,000 stores have already signed up, and you can find out more or where your nearest participating store is at autism.org.uk/autismhour”
To find our more information about attending a National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour, please visit: autism.org.uk/autismhour
    Notes to Editors:
For the National Autistic Society’s press enquiries, please contact the Press Team at press@nas.org.uk or on 020 7903 3539.
    The National Autistic Society
    • The National Autistic Society is the UK’s leading charity for people on the autism spectrum and their families. Founded in 1962, it provides information, support and pioneering services, and campaigns for a better world for people on the autism spectrum.
    • To find out more about autism or the NAS, visit www.autism.org.uk.
    • Follow the NAS on Twitter (@Autism) or Facebook (www.facebook.com/NationalAutisticSociety).

About the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour campaign
    • For autistic people, the world can seem full of too much information – and too little understanding. That’s why our Too Much Information campaign was launched, to challenge the myths, misconceptions and stereotypes that contribute to 79% of autistic people feeling socially isolated and 64% of autistic people avoiding going to the shops.
    • More than 1 in 100 of the population have been diagnosed with autism. Along with their families, that’s over 3 million customers waiting to be welcomed into your business. Over 99% of people have heard of autism, but only 16% of autistic people feel the public understand them.
    • As part of the Too Much Information campaign in the week of [insert date] the National Autistic Society are asking shops and businesses to organise a National Autistic Society Autism Hour and take simple steps for 60 minutes that lead to a more autism-friendly world:
What’s involved in a National Autistic Society Autism Hour?
    • Turning down music and other noise: Overwhelming noise is a common barrier to autistic people accessing shops. Where possible, in-store tannoy announcements and other controllable noise should be reduced.
    • Dimming the lights: Lighting, particularly fluorescent strip lighting, can be overwhelming for autistic people. Wherever possible, whilst maintaining a safe premises, lights should be dimmed or switched off.
    • Sharing information about autism with employees: We don’t expect everyone to be an autism expert but we believe everyone should understand autism. We’ll provide information about autism to help your staff make your customers’ experience a positive one.
    • Helping the public understand autism: During the week of 6 October, we’ll be asking participating shops and business to share information about autism with their customers.

    What is autism?
    • Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others.
    • More than 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum, including an estimated 700,000 people in the UK.
    • Every person on the autism spectrum is different. It can present some serious challenges – but, with the right support and understanding, autistic people and their families can live full lives.
    • Although everyone is different, people on the autism spectrum may:
    • Be under or oversensitive to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours, which can make everyday life extremely difficult
    • Find social situations and change a challenge, sometimes leading to extreme levels of anxiety

Promenades sets sail on fundraising journey with Charity of the Year 2018

The Promenades Shopping Centre has named the Bridlington Sea Cadets as its Charity of the Year 2018.

The announcement follows an invitation to the people of the town to nominate the charity they want the Promenades to work with over the next 12 months. A total of 20 nominations were received from the community, which was whittled down to a shortlist of five deserving causes who went on to be interviewed as part of the process.

Bridlington Sea Cadets were chosen as the Charity of the Year 2018 and will now benefit from the centre’s fundraising support, with a series of events organised to raise money.

As well as being Charity of the Year 2018, the Bridlington Sea Cadets will also partner the Promenades on the Promenades Extraordinary People Awards 2018, an annual awards ceremony that has become a highlight of the town’s social events calendar.

Carl Brown, centre manager for The Promenades, said: “We are absolutely delighted to name Bridlington Sea Cadets as our Charity of the Year. The nominations allowed the people of Bridlington to decide who should benefit from our fundraising support over the next year, so this is very much the people’s choice.

“We were overwhelmed by the response and it was a difficult job to pick an overall winner from so many worthy causes but after a tough process we were unanimous in our decision to support Bridlington Sea Cadets, who do so much wonderful work with the young people of the town. We’re looking forward to the year ahead and all of our customers supporting the charity to make a real difference to the work that they do.”

Bob Taylor, head of fundraising of the Bridlington Sea Cadets, said: “We are thrilled to be named as the Promenades’ Charity of the Year, especially as the selection process gave the judges such a difficult decision to make. We offer our cadets, who are aged 10-18 years, fun, friendship, adventure and the opportunity to learn new skills with waterborne and land-based activities and great facilities.

“Bridlington Sea Cadets is part of the Sea Cadet Corps, a nationwide voluntary uniformed organisation, the Sea Cadets are one of the oldest youth groups in the country going back more than 160 years.

“Working with the Promenades on a variety of fundraising events over the next 12 months will help us raise money to keep making a difference for our cadets. As well as supporting all the activities we offer, fundraising allows us to reduce the cost of training courses and voyages for our cadets.”

The Promenades Extraordinary People Awards, which celebrates the hard work of individuals and unsung heroes in Bridlington, will also raise funds for Bridlington Sea Cadets.

Little Experts wanted at The Promenades

Testing out the latest toys, games and gadgets before all your friends is every youngster’s dream and soon it could be reality for two lucky little ones.

This Christmas, The Promenades Shopping Centre is looking for at least two Little Experts aged five to ten-years-old who want to test out the latest must-haves, as well as the new tasty treats on the market, on the lead up to the festive season.

The Little Experts will be filmed talking about the games, toys and treats in their own words. They will explain how they work, what they like about them and what they would rate them in order to give parents, grandparents and family an idea of what to get children for Christmas.

Carl Brown, centre manager, said: “After launching Kids Club back in July, we have been looking for ways to make shopping with us easier for families and Little Experts will do just that.

“Parents will be able to hear straight from the kids all about the latest toys and hopefully make the decision of what to buy their own little ones a bit easier over what can be quite a stressful and busy time for parents.”

Little Experts is part of a nationwide Kids Club campaign run by NewRiver, the UK’s largest community and convenience focused property investor and owner of The Promenades.

When parents sign up to The Kids Club they receive a number of benefits including exclusive discounts in a number of town centre retailers and tourist attractions, free family events each month and a welcome pack filled with activities to keep little ones occupied during shopping trips.

Carl added: “Our Little Expert reviews will be uploaded to the centre’s social media pages each month and we will be giving customers the opportunity to win great prizes as well.”

The job role will be advertised on The Promenade’s Facebook page and people can put their children forward by commenting why their little is the one for the job.

Owners of The Promenades recruits TV child psychologist to help tame toddler tantrums while shopping

    Kids: shop, don’t strop!

NewRiver recruit child psychologist to help parents
tame toddler temper tantrums in their shopping centres

    • Two in five (38%) of Yorkshire parents claim their child has thrown a tantrum whilst shopping, with one in five (20%) saying they would rather avoid a trip to the shops with the kids for fear of their child misbehaving

    • Almost a third (28%) of parents polled from Yorkshire admit to using sweets and bribery to get their child to behave when shopping

    • TV psychologist Dr Sam Wass explains why children might find shopping a stressful experience and shares top tips to help make shopping more enjoyable for families

The all too familiar experience of witnessing a toddler meltdown in public is inhibiting mums and dads from hitting the shops, according to research commissioned by NewRiver – which owns and operates The Promenades Shopping Centre, in Brid. Two in five (38%) from Yorkshire complained about their child having a tantrum while shopping and one in five (20%) with children of school age said they avoid going to the shops for fear their offspring might misbehave.

The UK wide poll of 2,000 parents highlighted a need to help solve a common problem for customers shopping with young children in tow, as 1 in 5 of parents surveyed even confessed to having to leave a shop because of their child’s bad behaviour. Mum’s are seen to be the most self-conscious, with a third (32%) saying they felt judged in a shop when their kid started playing up, compared to just 1 in 5 of dads (22%). However, men admitted that they were the quickest to turn their noses up at mischievous children with 42% of those polled saying they have judged another parent whose child was misbehaving.

NewRiver is one of the UK’s largest shopping centre owner/managers with 33 community shopping centres including one of Bridlington’s busiest retail destinations, The Promenades. It has been looking at ways to improve the retail experience for families with young children and has brought on board child psychologist Dr Sam Wass.  Sam, who appears in Channel 4’s The Secret Life of Four Year Olds series, suggest ways to help understand the reasons behind shopping centre temper tantrums:

“Most children throw tantrums at some point – but, of all the times when they might misbehave, shopping is one of the most common,” Dr Sam Wass comments. “From a scientific point of view, we understand quite well why this is. Children tend to be more up and down in their moods than adults are – and are more affected by moving from a calm environment to a stressful one. Shops tend to be full of unfamiliar people and can be quite an unstructured and unpredictable experience. Children can feel they have no control over what happens next which can cause anxiety.

“A quarter (25%) of UK parents surveyed confessed to using sweets and other bribery tactics to improve the retail experience – but this can be quite counter-productive. The more presents you buy for children, the more presents or treats they will ask for. This might calm a child in the short term – but in the long term it can lead to further oppositional behaviours and naughtiness. Instead of costly gifts, try buying healthy snacks which are still considered a ‘treat’ for the child.”

Dr Sam Wass has worked with NewRiver to provide some top tips for parents to help manage the structure of shopping:

    • Time: “Time is a difficult concept for children to grasp so giving your child a clock or timer to look at would be a good way of helping them feel in control of the situation. Agree a time limit for being in the shop, encouraging them to watch it countdown.

    • Checklist: “Make the experience interactive and agree a shopping checklist which children can help to tick off, understanding that once the list is complete it’s time to go home. Ask them to help find the items they like: ‘Oh look, we’re in the cereal aisle, can you find the Ready Brek?’

    • Breaks: “Plan regular breaks in between shops with intervals of play or refreshments to keep children stimulated and give structure to the trip.

    • Rewards: “If you do want to buy a present for a child, it’s better not to give them the treat the moment they ask for it. Learning to wait is an important life skill for children to develop. Rewards for good behaviour are most effective when they are predictable, consistent – and when the child can see them coming in advance.

    • Warning signs: “Look for early warning signs of an outburst (agitation, hunger, tiredness or stress) and try to pre-empt the problem with a break, or a healthy snack. Be aware that your mood affects your child’s mood: shouting at an already anxious child is likely to make them behave worse, not better.”

Taking a hands-on approach to asset management, NewRiver is developing a ‘Kids Club’ to enhance the retail experience for families shopping across its centres. With the help of Dr Sam Wass, NewRiver will be rolling out a series of initiatives to help parents feel more at ease when shopping with their kids. NewRiver will be training local security teams in ‘tantrum taming’ this summer as well as implementing tactics such as treasure trails, free play areas and activities for children in their food courts, creating a more relaxed dining experience for the family.

Carl Brown, centre manager at The Promenades, said: “Most of us have all experienced our own kids having a meltdown or felt the pain of other parents struggle to keep their toddler happy while shopping. At The Promenades we’ve been working with Sam to come up with several tactics to make shopping more fun for small children. Our Kids Club will offer free events for children throughout the year, special offers for parents who sign up, and a ‘child safe’ scheme giving parents piece of mind when out shopping. Based on our research, we believe this will help keep children amused and incentivise good behaviour meaning happy families all round.”

Shopping centre book swap encourages more people to read this summer

Savvy book lovers are being encouraged to take part in a book swap event being launched by a Bridlington shopping centre this summer.

The Promenades Shopping Centre has developed the initiative to encourage more people in the town to take up reading during the warmer months.

Byron Hird, operations manager at The Promenades, said: “Reading is so important and this is a real community initiative.

“The idea of the book swap is to encourage people to try reading something they wouldn’t usually consider and we are encouraging people to bring in as many books as possible.”

The book swapping initiative will run until September and visitors will find the book shelf next to Argos.

New lease of life for Bridlington shopping centre as two new retailers get set to open their doors this weekend

A seaside shopping centre is to get a new lease of life as two new retailers gear up to open their doors for the first time this weekend.

Leading jewellery chain Warren James and discount health and beauty giant Savers will begin trading from The Promenades Shopping Centre this Saturday.

Savers will take over the former ladies fashion retailer Lavita and took just four weeks to fit out, while Warren James will open where Ryman Stationary used to stand.

Both retailers have hundreds of stores throughout the UK but the new stores will be both of the chain’s sole presence in Bridlington town centre.

Byron Hird, operations manager at The Promenades, said traders and shoppers alike are looking forward to welcoming the new additions to the centre.

He said: “We are continually looking to strengthen The Promenades’ position within the region’s retail sector and give our very loyal customers a wider and impressive choice of stores and overall a great shopping experience.

“The timing of these new additions is great as we head into Bridlington’s busiest months. I am sure they will be popular with locals and tourists alike as soon as they open.”

The arrival of the two new retailers comes hot on the heels of the opening of Jerome’s Cafe in the centre last month.

Shopping centre welcomes favourite Paw Patrol pup character for children’s charity fundraiser

Youngsters were out in force in Bridlington this Saturday as The Promenades Shopping Centre welcomed a popular canine star for an epic day of fundraising.

Marshall from TV’s Paw Patrol was in the centre from 12pm – 2pm, meeting adoring fans to raise money for Believe in Eve and Great Ormand Street Hospital. There was also a hunt around the centre which saw families off searching for the other pups.

The Promenades was one of 140 shopping centres across the UK that took part in ‘One Great Day’, a national fundraising initiative that involves a series of family and community charity events being held throughout the month of June by shopping centre’s across the country.

Byron Hird, operations manager at The Promenades, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be a part of One Great Day. PAW Patrol is an incredibly popular TV show and we were confident the event would be a hit.

“Hosting an event like this gives us the chance to give something back to support the Believe in Eve campaign and the fantastic work at Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity which supports patients and families from across the UK.

“One Great Day is about community engagement and raising money for a number of great causes, but it is also a fantastic opportunity for families in the area to get together and enjoy a fun day out whilst spending quality time together.”

The Believe in Eve campaign has captured the hearts of the town, which supports six-year-old Eve Gascoigne’s brave fight against cancer.

One Great Day was established in 2014 and has so far raised over £250,000 for 93 different children’s charities along with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. One Great Day now covers over 46 million square feet of retail space across the United Kingdom, from Folkestone to Aberdeen and nearly everywhere in-between.

Michal Noe, Trustee of One Great Day, said: “We are thrilled to have Prospect Centre as one of 140 shopping centres taking part this year. This is the largest One Great Day yet, and we are proud that One Great Day is helping so many children’s health charities across the country.”

Jerome’s Cafe opens its doors in popular shopping centre

A popular independent eatery among locals and visitors to Bridlington has opened it doors for the first time in the town’s busiest shopping centre.

Jerome’s Café is now trading from The Promenades Shopping Centre, where the former fashion retailer Street Cred used to be.

Byron Hird, operations manager at The Promenades Shopping Centre, said: “We are thrilled to announce the arrival of Jerome’s Café into the centre.

“It highlights the attractiveness of The Promenades that we can draw in established and unique names on the Bridlington high street that prove popular with locals and visitors to the town.

“I am confident traders and customers will very much look forward to welcoming Jerome’s Cafe as it will give people yet another reason to visit the centre.”

Jerome’s Café, owned by Michael Harrison, of Harrison Leisure, first opened at the Floral Pavilion in 1984, as a coffee and ice cream parlour, and was one of the very first venues to introduce continental coffees, such as cappuccino, espresso etc to the town.

The new branch offers a wide range of coffee, continental beers & wine, freshly made sandwiches and salads and an exciting new ice cream and desert menu, with over 26 flavours of Jerome’s famous ice cream.

The new venue can seat up to 80 people, which also extends on to the mall, and has presented several job opportunities from managerial positions to floor and counter staff.

Promenades Shopping Centre shortlisted for prestige national marketing accolade for new charity awards initiative

Spirits are high at one seaside shopping centre after being shortlisted for a prestige national retail marketing accolade for its brand-new charity ball and awards scheme.

The Promenades Shopping Centre, in Bridlington, entered the Extraordinary People Awards 2016 (EPAs) for a REVO Purple Apple Marketing Award under the Cause Related Marketing category.

The EPAs, are the first and only of its kind in the town, which brought the entire Bridlington community together, from 9-year-olds to 90-year-olds, under one roof to celebrate individuals hard work as well as raise vital funds for Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

More than 70 names were put forward for an award and 139 guests were welcomed through the through the doors of Bridlington’s most impressive historical landmark, The Bridlington Spa, where they enjoyed a glamourous evening of awards and entertainment and raising £1500 in the process.

Maria Kamper, centre manager, said: “Everyone at The Promenades is delighted that we have been shortlisted for one of the most prestige marketing awards in the retail industry.

“It is an extremely proud moment that a small shopping centre from Bridlington is making waves on the national retail stage and the shortlisting is a testament to the exceptional hard work everyone put in to make sure this initiative was a success.”

Shopping centre announces RNLI Bridlington Lifeboat Station as new local charity partner after public vote

Promenades Shopping Centre has announced RNLI Bridlington as its partner charity for 2017 after the people of Bridlington were given the power to decide who should get the centre’s fundraising support this year.

More than 170 people put forward the names of 15 different local charities and good causes, which ranged from national charities such as British Red Cross and RSPCA to more local causes.

The centre management team had the tough job of whittling them down and picking an overall winner, but the decision in favour of the lifeboat charity was unanimous.

Maria Kamper, centre manager, said: “We are extremely pleased and excited to announce RLNI Bridlington as our partner charity for 2017.

“We are all really looking forward to starting this new partnership and I am confident our customers will get behind this cause and we hope to raise enough to make a real difference to the charity.”

More than 40 people put the charity’s name forward and Bob Taylor, chairman of fundraising at Bridlington Lifeboat Station, said he was delighted when he received the news.

He said: “We are thrilled that RNLI Bridlington has been selected as The Promenades Shopping Centre’s charity partner and it is even more fantastic that the public were key in the decision making.

“Our volunteer crew depends on donations and fundraising like this to maintain their lifesaving service, but the partnership will also be a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of the local RNLI services and promote staying safe at sea.”

Over the last year, The Promenades raised over £18,762 for charities across the UK.

Shopping centre donates hundreds of unwanted items to local charity stores to make room for exciting new retailer

A shopping centre at the heart of the Bridlington community has donated hundreds of items left over in a vacant unit in preparation for welcoming an exciting new offer.

The Promenades Shopping Centre distributed unwanted shoes and clothes to Age UK and the British Heart Foundation, which had been stored in a vacant unit formerly belonging to Street Cred.

It can now be revealed that Jerome’s Café, a popular independent eatery among locals and visitors to the town, has taken over the lease of the former fashion retailer and is set to open in time for Mother’s Day.

Maria Kamper, Centre Manager at The Promenades Shopping Centre, said: “We are thrilled to announce the arrival of Jerome’s Café into the centre.

Jerome’s Café, owned by Michael Harrison, of Harrison Leisure, first opened as a coffee and ice-cream parlour on the Bridlington sea front in 1983 and was the first place to introduce Cappuccino to the Bridlington café scene at just 50p a cup.

The new branch will boast a fully-fledged dessert parlour, offering homemade ice-cream and desserts, which will be made on its Pavilion Bar premises and delivered fresh each day – sandwiches and salads will also be available.

The new venue will seat up to 80 people, which will also extend on to the mall, and will present several job opportunities from managerial positions to floor and counter staff.

The British Heart Foundation, one of the charities to benefit from the clothes and shoes from Street Cred, has a store within the Centre.

Matt Anthony, assistant manager at the British Heart Foundation Bridington shop, said he was delighted the centre had chosen the store as one of the charities to receive the goods to prepare for the arrival of Jerome’s.

He said: “We are extremely grateful to The Promenades for this generous donation. As the UK’s leading funder of life saving heart research donations like this are helping the BHF to raise urgently needed funds.

“Heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer but through our research we can continue the fight against heart disease, so that nobody has to die prematurely from this devastating disease. Having a clear-out and donating your unwanted items to BHF shops really does help to save lives – it’s as simple as that.”

The new arrival of Jerome’s comes as Lavitta, a retailer focused on female fashion, announces its store closure towards the end of February as part of a nationwide restructure, which will see a number of closures across the UK.

Local business man Chris Parcel, owner of Old Penny Memories and Denise Cowling, Renaissance Co-ordinator were two of the four strong judging panel, which was also made up of Maria Kamper, event organiser and centre manager of Promenades Shopping Centre, and Rachael Dean, the centre’s PR and marketing manager.

“The awards represent just a small sample of the fantastic work that takes place right across our town each year and celebrate all that is good about our seaside resort.”

Simply take your phone to any of the retailers and show them you have ‘liked’ or ‘retweeted’ the Holiday at the Promenades social media post, in return for a chocolate gold medal.

Buckets and spades will also be given out at the event, ready to relax after a day of shopping on the beach. If that isn’t enough, a photography competition will be running for the chance to win a large flat screen TV! This will all be taking place on the 17th August from 12-2pm.

Just a week later on the 24th of August from 12-3pm will be a Bingo on the Beach event. Enjoy a recognised seaside holiday pastime within the Promenades Shopping Centre, where lucky winners will receive discount vouchers for selected stores.

Community initiative sees the best of Bridlington visible to millions of shopping centre visitors

Bridlington’s busiest retail destination has officially launched a set of banners in the centre – featuring the best of Bridlington and surrounding areas seen through the lens of some of the region’s best amateur photographers.

The Promenades Shopping Centre has unveiled the new banners, which features Bridlington Harbour, North Sands, Sewerby Gardens and the famous Gansey Girl statue. The photos were taken by Aaron Morris, Janet Buckle, Trevor Hedges and Mike Barnard respectively, who all entered their submissions to a photography competition by the Centre.

Promenades Shopping Centre saw more than 60 entries for the competition, with the public choosing from more than a dozen finalist entries.

Maria Kamper, Centre Manager for Promenades Shopping Centre, said: “We designed the banner competition to give local photographers the opportunity to not only showcase their brilliant work, but also to highlight the fantastic sights we have in the region.

“We want both local people and tourists to see how beautiful Bridlington and East Yorkshire is and our winning photographers have captured some stunning photography to show this. We are a shopping centre with the community at heart – our focuses are on providing a fantastic shopping experience in the heart of Bridlington’s town centre, but also to provide a place that benefits the community as well.

“We are delighted with the response of the Bridlington photographers who submitted their entries and we are really pleased with the resulting banners.”

The banners will be displayed in the centre for a number of years and have been installed ahead of the busy summer months, in which thousands of tourists visit the seaside resort destination.

Aaron Morris, one of the winning photographers, said: “I’m honoured to be a winner in this competition and have my photography displayed to everyone who passes through Promenades Shopping Centre.

“This competition has inspired me to take my interest in photography further – it is something that interests me greatly.”

The banners are available to see by visiting Promenades Shopping Centre. Finalist entries are also visible on the Promenades website – www.promenadesshoppingcentre.co.uk

Second year of mural competition continues to exceed expectations as more schools participate

The Centre Manager of a Bridlington shopping centre has said she is overwhelmed by the quality of artwork produced by local primary and secondary schools as part of an annual art competition hosted by the centre.

Maria Kamper, Centre Manager at Promenades Shopping Centre, launched the competition last year, in which schools paint huge murals which are displayed in centre throughout the year.

This year, eight schools from the Bridlington region entered the competition – with the theme focused on this year’s Tour de Yorkshire event. The public will be encouraged to vote for their favourite mural via the Promenades website and on the centre’s Facebook page.

Maria said: “The calibre of this year’s entries has again been outstanding and it demonstrates the amount of talent the children of Bridlington have.
“I’m delighted to see more schools entering it this year – it has introduced a bit of friendly rivalry between schools and it is great to see the competition continuing to grow.
“We try to involve the local community in as many initiatives as we can and we are delighted with the response.”

The school art competition is not the only community-based initiative devised by the centre this month, with local photographers also given the chance to submit photos of the local region, with winners having their work displayed on banners in the centre.

If you would like to vote for your favourite piece of school artwork, visit www.promenadesshoppingcentre.co.uk or visit the centre’s Facebook page.

Budding local photographers given unique opportunity to have their work displayed in front of millions of shoppers

Budding Bridlington-based photographers have been given the opportunity to have their work displayed in one of the town’s busiest destinations as part of a competition.

Promenades Shopping Centre, which experiences footfall levels of just over four million every year, is giving the region’s photographers to submit their best pictures of the local area as it looks to introduce a new vibrancy to the centre. The winning photographs will be featured on banners throughout the centre, with the photographer’s name featured on the banner.

The shopping centre has appealed for all photographers, from amateurs to professionals, to submit their best work featuring some of the region’s beauty spots.

Maria Kamper, Centre Manager of Promenades Shopping Centre said: “As a retail destination with the community at its heart, we want to not only showcase some of the region’s best beauty spots, but also to give local photographers a chance to have their work seen by millions of people from Bridlington and beyond.
“This year’s Tour de Yorkshire has not only seen visitors from across the UK, but from across the world as well and we want to show off what East Yorkshire has to offer in any way we can.
“We believe these banners will enhance our malls and it is even better to give people a chance to display something that they are proud of in the centre.”

Entries for the competition start on Wednesday, October 28th, with photographers given until November 30th to submit their picture. The pictures will then be put to the public to vote for before the winners are announced.

Any photographer willing to submit a photo must send their picture to dan.clark@mercury-marketing.co.uk with their name and contact number.

The Promenades Shopping Centre advises shoppers on top tips for a thrifty Christmas

Christmas can be an expensive time of year and it’s easy to get carried away. From gifts and decorations to lashings of fine festive food and partywear, The Promenades Shopping Centre has compiled a comprehensive guide to thrifty shopping, to ensure you have everything you need this Christmas without breaking the bank.

    1. He’s making a list and checking it twice – Just like Santa, it’s important to make a list. Ensure you know who you need to buy for and do some research before you hit the shops to avoid panic-buying.

    2. Buy more for your buck – Look out for offers where you can secure gifts for a few people at once. Many of our stores have some brilliant offers in store, including 3 for 2 offers, so make sure you make the most of it.

    3. Free Parking – Take advantage of other offers that save you that little bit extra.

    4. Arrange the turkey in advance – It’s never too early to get the turkey ordered and if you shop around in advance you’re more likely to get the best deal.

    5. Deck the halls (or just one hall each year) – Buy a few decorations each year to build up your collection without breaking the bank. This means you can have a slightly new look every year, but without spending too much. Poundland has some great baubles available already and at just £1 each are a real bargain.

    6. Clever Clothing Tricks – Invest in one staple wardrobe piece and a few accessories to change and update the look – you’ll feel as though you have a new outfit on for your Christmas do, going out with friends and Christmas Day with the family without having to buy three outfits. We have a great range of clothing stores including New Look, Peacocks, Select and Store Twenty One, so you can be sure to find the perfect outfit for the big day.

    7. Share the load – Take turns with friends to host a buffet after Christmas – you can all get rid of your excess turkey and it means you can share the cost of party food between Christmas and New Year.

8.Listen online – Regularly check the website and social media channels of your local shopping centre. At this time of year there are lots of updates on opening hours, New Year Sales and the latest discount offers so you can be the first to see what’s going on and to get to the shops when the best discounts land.

    9. Don’t leave it all to the last minute! Plan in advance and explore the shops during extended opening hours. Our Christmas opening hours can be found here.

    10. Charity begins at home – Take the kids to see Santa at The Promenades this year. Bridlington Lions has set up a lovely grotto for the children to come each weekend and visit the man himself, with only a donation to the club required for entry.

Bridlington’s Promenades Shopping Centre announces festively fun events for all the family

A series of exciting Christmas events will take place in Bridlington this month as the town’s premier shopping destination is set to be a hive of activity full of festive fun.

The Promenades Shopping Centre will be the home of Santa’s grotto in Bridlington every weekend from November 29th until Christmas after linking up with Bridlington Lions Club. Children will be able to visit the grotto by donating towards the Club.

Children will also be given an exclusive chance to have breakfast with Santa in the Quayside Diner in the Promenades on Sunday, December 7th at 10.30am.

The Centre is also giving away hundreds of pounds worth of prizes in the run up to Christmas through a number of competitions on Facebook and Twitter.

Promenades Shopping Centre Manager Maria Kamper said: “The Promenades Shopping Centre is delighted to welcome Santa here to the Promenades in the run up to Christmas to entertain children as they visit the Centre.

“As a shopping centre with the community at heart, we wanted to focus our festivities on something in which the whole family can enjoy while they finish their Christmas shopping.”

Children attending the breakfast with Santa will be able to eat a breakfast of their choice with the man himself and they will also receive a toy.

Quayside Diner Catering Manager Barbara Hastings said: “We are delighted to be involved with The Promenades’ by hosting a Breakfast with Santa.

“We are anticipating it will be really popular with all the children and everyone at Quayside Diner is looking forward to being part of this exclusive breakfast.”

Along with Santa’s visit to the Centre every weekend, The Promenades will be hosting a festive ‘Stalls in the Malls’ on December 20th, in which some of East Yorkshire’s best producers and traders will be given a place on the high street to sell unique gifts.

This comes after The Promenades linked up with Eve Lomax, the creator and organiser of Prospect Shopping Centre’s UPmarket in Hull, to bring a bespoke offering to Bridlington shoppers.

Facebook and Twitter users will be able to enter a competition to win £500 by telling the Centre what they would like for Christmas using the hashtag #DearPromenades on the centre’s social media pages.

Visitors to The Promenades can also win £100 every week in the run up to Christmas if they take a picture of themselves with a toy Santa hidden around the Centre and posting it to the Centre’s Facebook or Twitter.

The Hunmanby and District Silver Band will also be creating a festive atmosphere on Christmas Eve by playing a number of Christmas tunes in the Centre to get visitors in the spirit.

Maria continued: “The Hunmanby Silver Band is loved across East Yorkshire and we are thrilled to have them in The Promenades to create a truly festive atmosphere on Christmas Eve.

“The addition of Stalls in the Malls to the Centre gives our visitors more choice under one roof – which will benefit so many people completing their Christmas shopping.

“We are looking forward to bringing a magical Christmas to Bridlington and we hope everyone in the town comes and joins in with the festivities.”
