Bridlington Rotary Club & The Promenades are inviting the people of Bridlington to attend their annual Blood Pressure Testing event in association with the Stroke Association as part of Know Your Blood Pressure Day.
This year’s event is taking place on Saturday 19th May in the Promenades Shopping Centre in Bridlington from 9.30 am to 4.00pm.
Many people think that a stroke only happen to older people but a stroke can strike anyone at any time.
While most people who have a stroke are older, younger people can have strokes too, including children. One in four strokes in the UK happens to people of working age.
There are lots of things you can do to reduce your risk. With simple checks, your GP can help you understand your risk of stroke and support you to make the changes necessary to reduce your risk.
High blood pressure is a significant contributing factor to strokes, so community testing events are extremely important in raising public awareness and directing those in need to their GP.
It is estimated that in the UK 5.5 million people are undiagnosed with high blood pressure, something Rotary clubs across the country are trying to reduce.
In 2016, Rotary clubs hosted 360 events in communities across the country as part of a record breaking year for Know Your Blood Pressure Day, with 23,000 blood pressures being taken and over 6,000 of those being referred to their GP.
This simple, quick and painless test could save your life!

Byron Hird, operations manager at The Promenades, said: “Reading is so important and this is a real community initiative.
“The idea of the book swap is to encourage people to try reading something they wouldn’t usually consider and we are encouraging people to bring in as many books as possible.”
The book swapping initiative will run until September and visitors will find the book shelf next to Argos.

The end of 2015 saw an overwhelming response from the Bridlington community as eight schools from across the region competed in the second edition of Promenades Shopping Centre’s art mural competition.
Using the popular Tour de Yorkshire as a theme for the competition, school children painted what the major cycling event meant to them. Hundreds of school children were involved in the project, with the public voting on their favourite to win the competition.
The public voted in their thousands to declare Flamborough Primary School the winner, which will now have its mural featured at the Bridlington Arts Festival 2016.
The success of the competition has also meant that it has been entered for a BCSC Purple Apple Award, which is the only national awards that recognises shopping centre marketing.
